Wash the pears and choose whether to peel them or not. The original recipe says to leave the skins on; I peeled two pears with a potato peeler and they baked just as well as the unpeeled ones, so it’s up to you. Do not remove the seeds and do not break off the stems.
Place the pears in a pot or oven dish and pour the wine over them, making sure it doesn’t completely cover them. Sprinkle the sugar over the pears and add the cloves to the wine.
Put the dish in a preheated oven at 180°C for about one hour; I left them for an hour and a half. From time to time, gently shake the dish so the pears get coated with the wine, which should thicken into a syrup and reduce in the pan.
When they are done, discard the cloves, place the pears on a serving dish, and pour over them the wine, which will have turned into an almost syrup-like sauce.
